Summer Jewelry Care: Sunscreen, Sweat & Storage (My Simple Sparkle-Saving Routine

Flat lay of handmade beaded bracelets and a pendant with soft pink accents on a bright white background.

Summer is my favorite season for color, happy vibes, and showing off fun jewelry but lets be real: summer can be tough on your sparkle. Between sunscreen, sweat, lake days, and tossing things into a beach bag, your jewelry can get dull, sticky, or stretched out faster than youd expect.

So today I'm sharing my simple, no-stress routine for keeping your pieces looking their best all season long especially bracelets, beaded styles, and everyday favorites.

1) The last on, first off rule (my #1 tip)

If you remember only one thing, remember this: put your jewelry on last, and take it off first.

That means:

·      Get dressed

·      Do your hair

·      Apply lotion + perfume

·      Apply sunscreen

·      Then add your jewelry

When you get home:

·      Take jewelry off before you wash your hands, shower, or start cleaning

This one habit prevents so much buildup and keeps finishes looking fresh.

2) Sunscreen + jewelry: what actually happens

Sunscreen is amazing for skin, but it can leave a film on jewelry that:

·      Makes beads look cloudy

·      Dulls shine

·      Traps dust and sweat (especially on bracelets)

My fix: after sunscreen is fully absorbed (give it 106 minutes), wipe your wrists/neck lightly with a clean towel before putting jewelry on.

3) Sweat happens here's how to handle it

If you're outside a lot (markets, yard work, walks, summer festivals), sweat can:

·      Leave salt residue

·      Make metal look dull

·      Stretch elastic over time

Quick care: at the end of the day, use a soft dry cloth (microfiber is perfect) and gently wipe your jewelry down. This takes 30 seconds and makes a huge difference.

4) Water is the sneaky sparkle thief

Even if something looks fine after water exposure, repeated contact can shorten its lifespan.

Try to remove jewelry before:

·      Swimming (chlorine is harsh)

·      Hot tubs

·      Lake/river days

·      Showering

·      Washing dishes

If your jewelry accidentally gets wet:

1.        Pat dry immediately (don't rub aggressively)

2.        Let it air dry completely before storing

5) Storage: the easiest way to prevent tangles + scratches

Summer tends to mean travel, overnights, and I'll just toss it in my bag and that's when tangles and scratches happen.

My simple storage favorites:

·      A small jewelry pouch with separate pockets

·      A travel jewelry case

·      Even a clean zip pouch in a pinch (one piece per pouch!)

At home:

·      Store jewelry away from humidity (bathrooms are rough)

·      Keep pieces separated when possible

6) Bonus: how to keep stretch bracelets happy

Stretch bracelets are comfy and easy, but summer can be extra hard on them.

To help them last:

·      Roll them on/off your wrist (don't yank)

·      Avoid getting sunscreen directly on the elastic area

·      Don't leave them in a hot car (heat can weaken elastic)

If you ever feel like a bracelet is getting loose, message me I'm happy to help you figure out sizing or options.

Quick Summer Sparkle Checklist

·      Jewelry on last, off first

·      Let sunscreen dry before wearing

·      Wipe jewelry with a soft cloth after a sweaty day

·      Avoid pools/hot tubs when possible

·      Store pieces separately, especially while traveling

If you tell me your summer style (bright + bold, soft + neutral, or all the sparkle), I can recommend a simple everyday summer set that you'll actually wear on repeat.
